How Potassium helps minimize stress due to waterlogging ?

How Potassium helps minimize stress due to waterlogging ?Some times, heavy rains after prolonged dry spells creates water logging and making crops suffer either due to lodging or due to poor aeration.
K fertilization helps building cellulose thereby giving sturdiness to plant stems. This helps prevent lodging.
Poor drainage under water logged conditions can reduce soil aeration. This situation make roots starved for oxygen. For optimum growth plant roots require a proper balance (ratio) between solid (mineral & organic ), liquid (water) and gaseous (air) phases in the soil. For most plants, this ratio by volume is about 50:20:30, respectively. If oxygen is lacking, root respiration is affected resulting in reduced K uptake. Where there is a risk of lack of oxygen, K fertilization helps improve plant health.

Weekly Rice Price Update
2008

Approved by:

Prepared by:
Ponnarong Prasertsri, Agricultural Specialist, Maysa Kunasirirat, Agricultural Assistant

Report Highlights:
Export prices declined by 2-3 percent due to the government stock release and the weakening Thai baht. The retender of 1.4 million tons of the government stocks last week (November 28) attracted more participants than expected. The bidding prices were offered higher than the previous tender but still lower than market prices, particularly for 25% grade white rice. Quotations for the current crop were not offered at that low price due to high intervention prices under the current mortgage program.

african market

Although the rice market is free in West Africa, Burkina Faso and Mali imposed bans on their
exports during the second and third quarter of 2008 in response to the soaring food prices
and in order to maintain stable domestic prices. Senegal also reported smuggling to
Mauritania and other neighboring countries after the GOS decided during the third quarter of
2008 to suspend custom duties and subsidize the prices of various rice grades. These
decisions helped maintain relatively low prices for a short period, but quickly proved to be
very expensive and unsustainable for the GOS. Consequently, they were suspended in
September 2008.
