Rice bran obtained by the two stage milling of raw rice has nearly 18 to 20 per cent oil. However, a higher level of oil is present in bran obtained from parboiled paddy which does not require any stabilisation.
Oil can be obtained from rice bran by the traditional method of processing (pressing), but the yield would be low.
The modern methods of solvent extraction of bran can, however, recover all the oil present in the bran. The crude oil obtained from solvent extraction has to be further purified by degumming, dewaxing, deoderisation and decolouration to obtain edible grade rice bran oil."

UN Chronicle A magazine for the United Nations.: "More than half of the world’s 6 billion people eat rice as their staple food. Global rice prices have been rising since early 2003. Moderate increases of 9 per cent in 2006 and 17 per cent in 2007 were recorded, but since the beginning of 2008 international rice prices have shown a steep upward trend, reflecting a limited supply available for purchase.1 In March 2008, the high quality Thai 100 per cent B (white rice) was quoted at $562 per tonne, which was 74 per cent higher than in March 2007, and rose to $898 per tonne by mid-May 2008. Likewise, Thai A1 Super, fully broken rice, markedly increased by 94 per cent, from $263 per tonne in March 2007 to $522 in March 2008 and surged to $764 per tonne two months later. By May 2008, world rice prices were more than double their May 2007 level.
Hardest hit by this spike in prices are major rice-importing countries, especially the Philippines, the world’s top rice importer. The increase in prices worldwide also drove up domestic rice prices, which rose from March 2007 to March 2008 by 100 per cent in Bangladesh and Cambodia, 70 per cent in Afghanistan, 55 per cent in Sri Lanka and 40 per cent in the Philippines.2 Only 6 to 7 per cent of global rice production is traded internationally each year.1 Due to a very thin market, the price of rice has been subject to the sharpest fluctuations among the world’s traded staples."

US rejects six 'filthy' basmati shipments- Commodities-Markets-The Economic Times: "According to US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA), six Indian consignments of basmati rice, both raw and parboiled, have been rejected since March on charge that they are ‘filthy’.

The rejected consignment belongs to, among others, MR Overseas (Delhi), Keshav Exports (Bangalore), New Bharat Rice Mills (Punjab), Evergreen Exports (Mumbai), Basic India and Bhanu Foods India (both from Delhi). Trade sources said approximate quantity of rejected consignment of a single exporter is about 20 tonnes. They said for many of them, this was their maiden exports to US."

Bangladesh, other three countries to buy less rice on good harvest: "Bangladesh, Indonesia, the Philippines and Turkey are foreseen to buy less after harvesting good crops, according to Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)'s latest forecast.

In contrast, Afghanistan, China mainland, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, the Democratic Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen are expected to import more, often to cover production shortfalls, but also to reconstitute national food reserves, it notes.

The global rice trade in 2009 is expected to marke a rise against that of the previous year. At the same time, there will be an increase in world imports influenced by low prices relative to the previous year, the forecast says.

The forecast indicates that world rice trade in 2009 now points to a volume of 31 million tonnes, 200 000 tonnes more than in 2008, but still short of the 2007 record.

It, however, sees much uncertainty as to the effects of the downturn of the world economy on the volume and nature of rice transactions in 2009. Given more difficult access to credit and lack of confidence over the financial situation of trade players, one possible effect could be an intensification of barter and government-to-government deals, it witnesses."
