Manila Bulletin: The importation of 1.8 million metric tons (MMT) this year may not be able to staunch fears of a rice shortage – and consequently of price increases – since production is expected to be down due to a huge slash in the use of petroleum-based fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemical-based inputs. Nearly 1.5 MMT of rice from Vietnam and Thailand will be pumped into the domestic supply by the end of the quarter, at which time local harvests are expected to come in to prop up local inventories. The Department of Agriculture (DA) says the importation from Vietnam and Thailand is meant to close the deficit in local rice production, considering the 10 percent post-harvest losses incurred by Filipino"

India: Rice Procurement Up 13.48% On Year: "India’s rice procurement during the current season is estimated to be 284.91 lakh MT as against the overall procurement of 251.07 lakh MT in 2006-2007, representing an increase of 13.48% over the previous year.
Till 11th February, a quantity of 217.68 lakh MT of rice has been procured in the current 2008-09 season as against 183.99 lakh MT of rice procured during corresponding period in last year."

= UPDATE: India To Export Basmati Rice To Iran, Saudi Arabia: "India's main customers for basmati rice, Saudi Arabia and Iran, signed deals to purchase 200,000 metric tons of the aromatic grain after the government scrapped an export tax late last month, traders said Friday.
'There has been good response from Saudi Arabia and Iran after the (export) tax was removed,' said Gurnam Arora, joint managing director of Kohinoor Foods Ltd. (512559.BY)."

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has instructed that this year, Vietnam will export between 4.5-5 tonnes of rice.
However, according to a recent dispatch released by the PM, this volume would be adjusted by the end of the 2 nd quarter to take into account the rice production, price and market situation, using reports by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as the basis for any adjustments."
